Why do people hate genetically modified foods?
Mayans Employed Genetic Modification to Change Teosinte into Corn -- It took them centuries to accomplish this transformation -- |
Yahoo's comments are worthwhile:
a = teosinte,
b = hybrid of teocinte and maize
c = today's hybrid maize
d = genetically modified sweet corn

"I understand that Monsanto is a terrible, evil
corporation but the two don't always go hand-in-hand. GMOs show a lot of
promise. They saved the papaya industry from a pest that would have otherwise
destroyed it.
GMOs can make foods more hardy, taste better, and be more
nutritionally viable. There are people who say that GMOs are unnatural, but its
the same thing that farmers have been doing for thousands of years except
faster and more precise (think corn). All of the arguments that I've heard
against it are simply untrue or can be solved with careful screening (which
happens anyways).
The fact that so many people are against this wonderful and
promising technology, most of them not even trying to understand the basic
principles of it, makes me very upset. This stuff can solve world hunger and
there are people acting like its poison. So why do people outright hate GMOs so
much?"
A better explanation comes from Scientific American's short video:

Now look as the percentage of US grown basic foods that are genetically engineered:

Now look as the percentage of US grown basic foods that are genetically engineered:
US Dept. of Agriculture: This year 93% of soy beans and 85% of the corn grown in the US has been genetically engineered. |
